Filtration:
It is very simple to keep Nishikigoi if you have equipment for filtering
and cleaning water. It is advisable to consult a Koi dealer or specialist as
to which type of filter is most suitable for you.
Health Management:
Koi have been bred over the years primarily for their ornamental
qualities. Accordingly, much of their natural resistance to disease has been
lost. It is a fact that high quality koi can be more predisposed to disease
than those of poor quality. A successful fish keeper must understand that
fish, like people, sometimes get sick.
Fortunately, we do have at our disposal modern chemicals and drugs can cure
almost anything. Most fish diseases
fall into two categories, parasite or bacteria. The fish culturist must
observe subtle changes, which may signal the beginning of future disease
problems. Once the problem has been diagnosed an aggressive treatment should
follow.
Transporting Koi
When purchased, Koi are placed in a plastic bag containing water and
oxygen and must be carried quickly and safely to your pond. It is important
that they are not shocked in transport. Before putting a new fish in the
pond, first consider the implementation of a
quarantine tank, to isolate
your new fish before introducing them into your main pond.
When you are ready to "release" your Koi from the transport bag, float
the unopened plastic bag on the water surface for about 30 minutes. When the
temperatures of the water inside the bag and the pond, or
quarantine tank, have
equalized, open the bag and gently let the fish swim out. Take care not to
let the water from the bag flow into the pond. |
