Unsightly foam and froth present on the surface of ponds is due to an excess of protein in the water. The more protein present the larger the amount of foam.

The actions of Antifoam will break down the froth, but it will not get rid of the protein in the water. Antifoam is non toxic and can be used daily if necessary.

If there is a lot of foam constantly present, the efficiency of the biological filtration system should be checked by using Ammonia and Nitrite test kits and the amount of food fed should be reduced.

One last thing you may want to consider using a Protein Skimmer for a long term solution.

Freshly drawn tap water contains chlorine and chloramines, which is added to the water by the water authorities to disinfect and prevent contamination by bacteria and other pathogenic agents. Unfortunately both these compounds are extremely toxic to our koi, causing panic and intense gill irritation amongst other symptoms.

Thus when ever tap water is added to the pond, i.e during a water change the chlorine and chloramines must be removed. Chlor-Go contains compounds that not only remove the chlorine and chloramines, but also remove any heavy metals that are frequently present at low levels in tap water.

If you are performing large and regular water changes you will find that a lot of Chlor-Go is being used.

It may be better to consider filtering your tap water through one of our purifiers shown below which will absorb these toxic compounds and keep your fish safe.

Maintaining a general hardness of water of at least 8 degrees of hardness helps to keep the biological processes working properly thus avoiding stagnation and acidification.

The calcium and magnesium forming the general hardness of water are essential for the proper growth of plants and aquatic micro-organisms which consume unicellular algae and help to keep the water clear.

Removal of suspended debris and algae improves the health and appetite of the fish in the pond.

All in one Nitrite/Ammonia/Phosphate remover, this also helps control waste, improves clarity, prevents blanket weed and generally helps to stimulate the vitality of your koi.

Also provides extra surface for filter bacteria to grow on.

This is a powerful zeolite based medium, which because of the ideal particle size has a very high capacity to remove ammonia and phosphate and prevent the formation of nitrate.

Sprinkle granules over the surface of the pond or add to filter in a fine net and add every 8 weeks during summer months.

The buffer capacity of pond water is the ability of pond water to maintain the pH at the correct level for the survival of your fish. The metabolism of fish in the pond tends to use up KH buffer and if this is not replaced can lead to sudden pH crash causing death of fish, frequently at night.

We advise to test KH regularly with a KH Test Kit and maintain the KH level above 6 degrees carbonate hardness.

Occasionally the pH can rise and become more alkaline than is beneficial to the health of fish causing stress and encouraging algae.

Pond pH Down helps to reduce pH and can be used to maintain a pH of 6-8. Use in conjunction with A pH test kit.
