Sturgeon is the common name for the 27 species of fish belonging to the family Acipenseridae. Their evolution dates back to the triassic period, some 245 to 208 million years ago. The family is grouped into four genera: acipenser, huso, scaphirhynchus and pseudoscaphirhynchus. Sturgeon are long-lived, late maturing fish. Sturgeons have an average lifespan of around 50 to 60 years.
Unlike other ornamental species, sturgeon are true carnivores meaning they cannot digest most plant-based products, and being bottom-feeders they need a suitable diet that reflects this requirement.
Absolute Complete Sturgeon & Sterlet food primarily consists of protein from aquatic animal sources such as shrimp & fish protein. This closely mimics a sturgeon or sterlet's natural wild diet, resulting in a balanced and easily digestible food that is full fo essential amino acids with additional vitamin C, Calcium, Sodium, Magnesium and Zinc to help maintain a healthy body & immune system for sustained growth in the pond environment.
Feeding Guide:
Koi and other fish also love the taste of Absolute Complete Sturgeon & Sterlet food so when feeding your sturgeon ensure to keep the other fish occupied by feeding them at the opposite end of the pond you wish to feed your sturgeon or sterlets.
Unlike koi and goldfish, sturgeon & sterlets need to be fed all year round at varying intervals: the warmer the water temperature, the more demand is placed on the metabolic system resulting the need for more food to maintain health.
So, we recommend feeding enough Absolute Compete Sturgeon 7 Sterlets to be consumed within 5 minutes. Add more pellets as required. Feed down to water temperatures of 4 degrees Celsius.

What is Cloverleaf Sturgeon & Sterlet Sinking Food 4.5mm?
It is a complete, high-protein sinking pellet designed specifically for bottom-feeding species such as sturgeon and sterlets. The fast-sinking formula ensures the food reaches the pond floor where these fish naturally feed.
Is it suitable for koi?
Not as a staple.
Sturgeon foods are very high in protein and rich animal ingredients.
Occasional accidental feeding to koi is usually fine, but koi should primarily receive a balanced koi diet.
What size fish is the 4.5 mm pellet for?
Best suited to:
Small to medium sterlets
Medium sturgeon
Fish roughly 30–70 cm long
If fish struggle to swallow pellets whole, move down a size.
Does the food float or sink?
It is fast sinking by design.
This is important because sturgeon and sterlets are bottom feeders and rarely compete well at the surface.
How often should I feed it?
Typical guidance:
Feed 1–3 times daily (temperature dependent)
Only give what fish eat within about 5 minutes
Reduce feeding in cold water
Sturgeon often prefer several small feeds rather than one large meal.
Can it be fed in cold water?
Yes. It can be fed in water temperatures down to around 4 °C, provided fish are still active and feeding.
Will koi eat the pellets before the sturgeon?
Sometimes, yes. To help sturgeon get their share:
Feed koi first at the surface
Then add the sinking pellets
Or feed after dark when sturgeon are more active
Does it cloud the water?
When fed correctly, the pellets are highly digestible and should not cloud the pond. Overfeeding, however, can increase waste and affect water quality.
What makes this food suitable for sturgeon?
Key reasons:
Very high protein carnivore formula
Rich in aquatic animal ingredients
Fast sinking behaviour
Fortified with vitamins (A, D3, E, stabilised C)
Low fibre for easier digestion
These match the natural dietary needs of sturgeon species.
Can other pond fish eat it?
Yes, but with caveats:
Goldfish and koi may eat it opportunistically
It is not nutritionally balanced for omnivorous pond fish long-term
How should I store the food?
Keep cool and dry
Reseal the bag tightly
Use within a few months of opening for best freshness
Any common mistakes to avoid?
❌ Feeding too much at once
❌ Using pellets that are too large
❌ Assuming koi and sturgeon need the same food
❌ Letting koi outcompete bottom feeders
